“Stop staring at me,” I whispered as I handed him a loaf of bread.

“Sorry.”

“Liar.”

“You’re right. I’m lying. I’m not sorry that I can’t stop looking at you.”

I grinned down at the sandwich I was making. I knew how he felt, and it was flattering to know that he was going through the same thing I was. I couldn’t keep my eyes off him. It was hard enough to stop staring at the chiseled jaw and bright smile and broad shoulders before we were together—but afterward? Knowing how good he was, how good we were together? Forget about it.

“Everybody’s going to know,” I whispered. My cheeks tingled.

“Please. We’re alone. And besides, even if we weren’t, they’re all too busy thinking about the fun they’ll have later on tonight once I give them their liberty.”

“You give them a lot of liberty,” I observed as I slathered jelly on the bread.

“Maybe I want to get them out of here,” he teased.

When I looked up at him, there was a twinkle in his eye.

“Come on. You know what I mean. Are you sure they’re not getting themselves into trouble out there?”

He sighed and got serious. “I’m sure. Patria’s a peaceful planet. Everyone here is too busy screwing and dancing and having fun to worry about fighting.”

“What about drinking?”

“What about it?” he asked.

“Men tend to fight when they drink.”

“You speak like you know,” he murmured with a wicked smirk.

“I went to college,” I laughed.

“What’s that mean?”

“It means I’ve spent my fair share of time drinking at parties and watching how things tended to fall apart after a little while. One guy wants a girl. Another guy wants the same girl. Guys fight over her. Meanwhile, she goes off with somebody else because they’re both drunk and half-conscious by the time they finish. Who wants to deal with that?”

He laughed. “It’s not like that. I trust my crew.”

“You’re very trusting in general.”

“I like to believe the best in people,” he said, and damned if he didn’t sound completely serious.

Was it naïveté? Or was he really just a good person?

My heart twinged a little.

“Are you sure the others aren’t going to think I’m taking advantage of your kind nature?” I asked, cutting my sandwich in half and plopping it on a tray.

“What’s that supposed to mean?” He joined me at one of the tables in the otherwise empty commissary.

“What if one of them finds out about us and thinks I’m taking advantage of you, trying to trick you, something like that? Couldn’t they lock me back up or report you or something? It could get ugly.”

He mulled it over as he chewed on his PB&J.

I was pretty sure I had created an addict.

“I doubt it. I really doubt it. I’m scratching their backs right now, letting them run around and have fun before we get back to the mission. I don’t think any of them have ever wanted their crew mates to take their time recovering more than they do right now.”

I snorted. “Yeah, you’re probably right.”

“So they’re scratching my back, too.
